KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 – Trade between Malaysia and India is expected to double by 2015 as a result of many landmark agreements signed between the two countries.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said among them were the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, multiple memoranda of understanding in the fields of tourism, information technology and services, traditional medicine as well as in research and development collaboration.
“These are significant milestones that will feature prominently increasing trade and investment flows between Malaysia and India.
“We are confident the country-to-country relationship will manifest itself more intensely and significantly as the many initiatives start to take form and generate results,” he said in his speech at the TiE Asia-Pacific Conference 2010 here today.
Najib said Malaysian government had embarked on measures to provide unique opportunities for businesses to access financial and capital markets as the government realised that for entrepreneurs to be successful, adequate access to finance and capital was essential.
In this regard, he said, Bursa Malaysia was working with The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) to encourage Indian and non-resident Indian businesses to take advantage of the opportunities Malaysian capital markets had to offer.
He said the Securities Commission and the Stock Exchange Board of India had signed an agreement paving the way for improved opportunities in cross-border capital market activities.
Najib urged foreign entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in the country’s highly-developed Islamic banking and financial services industry.
“We can confidently say our financial institutions have more than adequate capacity to support entrepreneurs in their business endeavours,” he said.

KOTA TINGGI 16 Nov.

Bigger split in PKR?

He made a stopover in Sungai Petani last night and will be in his hometown, Kota Baru, later today.
In a hint of the magnitude of undercurrents in the party, Nurul Izzah, Anwar’s daughter, said Zaid’s withdrawal and move to quit party posts was a big loss to PKR.
Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, who had threatened to also drop out of the contest, has meanwhile gathered the signatures of 24 divisional leaders calling for fresh elections.
As hints of a bigger-than-anticipated split in PKR surfaced, 100 young party members had at press time gathered at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
Badrul Hisham Shaharin, in a tight race for the leadership of Angkatan Muda Keadilan (PKR’s Youth wing), was expected to make a major announcement at the event called Rapat Anak Muda (Youth solidarity).
Badrul, known as Chegubard, is aligned to Zaid. He described the goings-on in the party as “not right”. While political analysts were asking last night if in PKR surfaced, 213 young party members gathered at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall last night.
Badrul Hisham Shaharin, in a tight race for the leadership of Angkatan Muda Keadilan (PKR’s Youth wing), presided over the Rapat Anak Muda (youth solidarity).
He said Fauzi had been appointed as a mediator to bring six resolutions to the attention of the president, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in the next 24 hours.
“An announcement will be made by Fauzi within 24 hours on the next decision with regards to the elections,” Badrul said.
Badrul, known as Chegubard, is aligned to Zaid. He described the goings-on in the party as “not right”, arguing that the young had to step in to right the wrongs inflicted on the party by the seniors.
Nurul Izzah Anwar, a candidate for one of the vice-president’s slots, attended the meeting and was eager to maintain the official party line when she spoke to reporters. Party officials were giving varied interpretations of this turn
of events. One leader said this was “an exercise in crisis management”.
Another put on a brave front, saying this was a“maturing process”. The party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) and political bureau met last night, among others, to discuss a memorandum submitted by Mustaffa demanding the postponement of the elections.
The memorandum was handed to Dr Wan Azizah and CEC chairman Dr Molly Cheah at the party headquarters on Tuesday.
“The outcome of the first meeting of the CEC will be considered by the political bureau meeting tonight, chaired by the president,” Cheah said.
When contacted, Mustaffa said Dr Wan Azizah and Cheah had promised to seriously look into the matter.
“I was told that the issue would be discussed today (yesterday)but I do not know who will be involved in the discussions.”
On Monday, Mustaffa had urged that the elections be postponed until the party had completed investigations into alleged electoral fraud and revamped the election committee.
His demands came after Zaid announced his pull-out from the deputy presidency contest and resigned all his party posts. Mustaffa had given the CEC 48 hours to find solutions or he might also be forced to withdraw from the race. That period ends late today.
“I will announce my decision by Friday morning.” Azmin, who is a vice-president, is currently leading the race with 6,467 votes, followed by Zaid with 3,988 and Mustaffa with 1,215.
Right or wrong is the only criterion — Sakmongkol AK47

SEPT 1 — A group of teenagers in western New York have been accused of harassing members of a mosque by yelling obscenities and insults during evening prayers for Ramadan, sideswiping a worshiper with a vehicle and firing a shotgun outside, the authorities said yesterday.
The teenagers were chased and cornered by members of the mosque, who held them for the police. They were charged with disrupting a religious service, a misdemeanor.
The above report appeared in the New York Times.
America it seems, despite the so many contradictions in its social life, is able to distinguish between what is right and wrong. Malaysia compares unfavourably in this department.
In fact this government appears hesitant when dealing with racism-inspired attacks against it. Instead it goes all out to appease the other side in an elaborate exercise that can only be considered as catharsis. The government leadership thinks by appeasing the other side, it’s cleansing itself from guilt.
Because anything the government does is judged on the basis of whether what they do is racist or not. The government has been accused of so many racist-based actions. Hence custodial deaths are seen as the work of some shadowy Malay extremists and scum; the death of an aide to a politician is judged as something done by an oppressive Malay organisation; and how the government handles abuses against the religion of Islam will be seen only in terms of whether its actions are race based. People forget that the most important criterion in judging transgressions, crimes and wrongs committed is whether they are right or wrong.
No moral pontificating, no winding analyses by political windbags and no noises from self-anointed “civil rights” spokesmen. If the rapper Namewee has committed a wrong such as can lead to racial upheavals, he should be punished on the basis of whether he has done right or wrong. The fact that he is Chinese is immaterial.
I can’t reconcile with this idea, that a Chinese is not capable of being a racist while the government, because it’s controlled by Malays, is forever to be condemned as racist.
If this government does anything to non-Malays, it can be considered racist. When two Malay teenagers were caught burning a church in Cheras, the government gave money, and the teenagers were sent to jail for years.
When some Chinese boys desecrated a surau in Negeri Sembilan, the parents of these boys asked for forgiveness and the matter was forgotten.
When the rapper who claims he is an embodiment of 1 Malaysia appeared in another YouTube flick “doin his f*****g thang” complete with vulgar words and lewd gesticulations, “rights” groups quickly came to his defence.
This brings the subject of racism out into the open. It appears only the Malay-led government and Malays in general are capable of racism while non-Malays, because they are in the minority, are absolved from that same charge.
It means also that only certain people can be official “victims” of racism, sexism, and similar offences. So when non-Malay leaders justify whatever actions done by these loonies, they justify this on the basis that non-Malays cannot be racists and Malays cannot be race victims.
No consciences are enlivened by these so-called leaders of conscience, by the Lim Kit Siangs, by the do-gooders of PKR, and so forth. These frauds assault our sensibilities, threaten, and pontificate, but they do not speak at all to our sense of right and wrong.
The porn actor has got it correct this time, if Namewee has done something wrong this time, he must face the music. He is just as capable of committing racism as the Malay boys sentenced to five years’ jail. — sakmongkol.blogspot.com

SEPT 3 — Rapper Wee Meng Chee or better known as Namewee is wrong this time as he has certainly done something inappropriate.
Many people supported him in the national anthem controversy three years ago as he had won sympathy by mentioning bureaucracy and corruption in the song.
Even though it was disrespectful to playfully indite the national anthem, the Cabinet still accepted his apology and did not take the case to court.
He had also tarnished the image and reputation of his alma mater Chung Hwa High School in Muar, in a vulgar video clip “Teacher Hew ABC Time” in 2008, which resulted in the school board of directors issuing him a legal letter.
This time, even MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who had helped Namewee to settle the controversy three years ago, endorses actions to be taken by the government against him.
Namewee has done wrong in a few aspects.
First, he should not have launched a personal attack, which is unacceptable in a civil society. How would you feel if your mother and family are insulted with dirty words? Please do not do to others what you do not wish others to do to you.
Secondly, it is unwise for him to come forward during this crucial and sensitive period and stir up more trouble.
Thirdly, when everyone is fully condemning racist remarks and urging the government to punish the principal who allegedly made racist remarks against her non-Malay students, Namewee’s YouTube posting has complicated the matter, giving an opportunity to politicians to divert attention and clear the person who has done wrong.
There might be a rebellious period in the process of growing up but there is a limit to it. Perhaps, Namewee will only mature after experiencing some setbacks.
Namewee is a talented young man and he should apply his talents in more meaningful aspects, such as the charity song “You Still Have Me” he wrote to raise fund for the Taiwanese flood victims.
It is not necessarily to attract attention and enhance your reputation with vulgar language, indecent gestures and obscene facial expressions. One will only lower one’s own standard if his creations are full of such elements.
We also should not think that it is only a personal matter and that of his family as Namewee might represent a phenomenon.
I went through the messages posted on Namewee’s Facebook page and found that many young people tended to sympathise and support him. It is indeed their freedom of expression, but there is one thing worrying, namely many people are unable to distinguish between national management and mutual respect for all races.
Indeed, there are many problems in our national management, including unfair policies, corruption and the lack of execution capability. But these have nothing to do with races. We cannot hate anyone because of these problems. The key is to solve the management problems.
When parents are teaching their children at home, they should not instill hatred to avoid turning discontentment into an extreme mindset.
We must recognise and accept the reality. This is a multi-racial country. So what even if you win the war of words? Mutual communication, respect and trust are the correct path. — mysinchew.com
Letterhead saga: DAP sacks two more members

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — The Selangor letterhead saga continued today when the DAP issued a two-year expulsion order on two members — Yap Hock Siew and Ong Chai Huat — for allegedly using a support letter for personal gain.
DAP disciplinary committee chairman Tan Kok Wai made the announcement in a statement today, explaining that the duo had been found guilty of breaching party discipline.
“Both Yap and Ong were found to have committed direct conflict of interest which is in breach of party discipline when the former issued a letter of support under the letterhead of the Pandamaran Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) in favour of a business where both are partners,” he said in the statement.
Tan noted that Yap and Ong were both chairman and vice-chairman of the Pasar Pandamaran DAP branch respectively at the time of their alleged wrongdoing.
“They have 14 days from the date of the disciplinary action to appeal in writing against the decision to the party’s central executive committee,” he added.
Last month, the state government suspended Yap from his position as Pandamaran new village head for attempting to use the support letter to obtain a contract from the Klang Municipal Council for his company.
Both Yap and Ong were accused of having applied for a contract to maintain and clean river floodgates.
Yap had also admitted to issuing the support letter, but with the endorsement of Selangor state executive councillor Ronnie Liu, who has also come under fire for his involvement in the issue.
He was reported to have said that he had used the company to get the job for the Pandamaran JKKK to help pay the utility bills for village facilities.
The DAP had earlier let off Liu with a “severe reprimand” for failing to run his office professionally during the first letterhead scandal involving Klang councillor Tee Boon Hock.
Tee was accused of forging Liu’s signature to issue support letters to obtain contracts worth over RM1 million for 16 companies, one of which is co-owned by his son Chin Chin.
Tee has since been expelled from DAP and sacked as a councillor and Liu was found partially responsible for the actions of his former aide.
Since then, there has been mounting pressure from many DAP leaders calling for Liu’s resignation.
Dr Ling says guilty if Dr M says so

lingPUTRAJAYA, Sept 3 — Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik declared today that he will be guilty of cheating in the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal if his former boss Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says so.
Dr Ling, the former transport minister in Dr Mahathir’s Cabinet, said today he was thankful to the former PM for his “generous” offer to testify in his PKFZ cheating trial.
The former MCA president said his ex-boss’s testimony was important because he chaired Cabinet meetings.
“I would like to say thank you very much to him because that is very generous of him because he was chairing the Cabinet meeting and I am being charged for cheating the whole Cabinet so all these witnesses are very important,” he told reporters at the Sessions Court here today.
Dr Mahathir has said that he will testify in the former transport minister’s trial if the court subpoenas him.
The former PM had also pointed out that Dr Ling is innocent until proven guilty.
Dr Ling said that if Dr Mahathir testifies that the Cabinet was cheated, then he would indeed be guilty.
“If they bear witness that they were cheated then I am guilty. If they bear witness that I cheated then there is a case for trial,” he added.
Dr Ling, 67, is charged with cheating the government by misleading the Cabinet helmed by Dr Mahathir on the land acquisition for the PKFZ project.
The PKFZ project was mooted during his term as transport minister and the cost of the project, initially estimated at less than RM2 billion, more than doubled to RM4.6 billion by 2007.
The total bill for the project is expected to swell to as much as RM12.5 billion due to interest costs from deferred payments, if the trans-shipment hub fails to perform.
He faces up to seven years in jail and a fine under the Penal Code, if found guilty.
The friendship between the two doctors dates back to the 1980s when Dr Ling helped hold the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) together as the MCA president while Dr Mahathir struggled to unite the splintered Umno. Both retired from Cabinet the same year — Dr Ling in May 2003, and Dr Mahathir five months later.
Dr Ling also dismissed speculation that he has been made a scapegoat for the scandal.
“When you are in the palace of justice, don’t talk about scapegoat,” he said.
Last year, The Malaysian Insider reported that Dr Ling had told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) probing the scandal-ridden PKFZ that it was Dr Mahathir who oversaw the project’s land valuation.
In the verbatim of the PAC meeting procedures, the former MCA president pointed out that the costing and valuation of the land was determined by the Valuation and Property Services Department which was chaired by Dr Mahathir, who was the then finance minister.
“Our job in Ministry of Transport is to only state the fact that we want the land. Costings, valuations and all that, it is not the function of the Ministry of Transport. We do not have a valuation department.
“Costings and valuations is a question for the Treasury to deal with. They have the Valuation Department and everything is there, not in Ministry of Transport. I think [it was] Tun Dr Mahathir who chaired it, and he was the finance minister also. He saw it very clearly. That was the fact of the case,” Dr Ling said in the verbatim report.
