Ensure the various races remain united, King tells MPs

April 30, 2008 by admin

KUALA LUMPUR: It is the duty of every MP to ensure that the various races in the country remain united and to fight off any attempt to divide them, said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Stressing that the country’s success was the result of political stability and racial harmony, he urged all parties to bear the burden of ensuring that the various ethnic groups remained united, and to thwart every attempt to divide them.

“MPs must make national interests their main objective and not use this House for their own individual political interest. Therefore, an active participation and quality debate must be your main priority,” he said at the official opening of the 12th Parliament here yesterday.

The other highlights of his address were:

> Maintain subsidies to ensure that the people, especially the poor, are not burdened, especially in the face of global rising prices.

>The Government must fight corruption as the economic achievements and development will be meaningless if bribery, abuse of power and corruption still occur.

> The need for further improvements in the police force to ensure the security of the people and the country.
